Instructions for installation

To install a simple system for displaying the information on an HDMI capable TV or monitor with a Raspberry Pi 3b, use the following instructions.

  1. Buy a Raspberry Pi 3b package.
  2. Download the current desktop Raspbian distribution. This has been set up using Stretch. If you are using another version, you may have to modify this.
  3. Flash it to a MicroSD card using Etcher.
  4. Boot up your Raspberry Pi with the MicroSD Card.
  5. Connect to your network or wireless network.
  6. Change the keyboard layout to "Canada" and "English".
  7. Change the Preferences > Raspberry Pi Configuration > System > Underscan to "Disabled".
  8. Update the Raspberry Pi using sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade -y.
  9. Set up kiosk mode.
    • Go to the startup file using sudo nano ~/.config/lxsession/LXDE-pi/autostart.
    • Then add a # to the line @xscreensaver -no-splash to disable the screensaver.
    • Then add below that line the lines, @xset s off, @xset -dpms, and @xset s noblank to turn off power management and keep the screen from blanking after a period of inactivity.
    • Then add below that the line @sed -i 's/"exited_cleanly": false/"exited_cleanly": true/' ~/.config/chromium/Default/Preferences to prevent any error messages from displaying on the screen in the instance that someone accidentally power cycles the pi without going through the shutdown procedure.
    • Then add @chromium-browser --incognito --disable-session-crashed-bubble --disable-infobars --no-first-run --kiosk http://bettermedicine.ca/feeds/sno-main-hd to start the Chromium browser in kiosk mode open to the appropriate information feed. Replace bettermedicine.ca with the appropriate feed url.
    • Type ctrl-O and then ctrl-X again to write out and exit the file. Then type sudo reboot.
  10. If you need to make some changes after setting this up, you need to be able to get out of kiosk mode. You can use Alt-F4 to get out of kiosk mode or Ctrl-Esc to get the Menu with Shutdown available.
  11. This is optional, but the splash screen is located at /usr/share/plymouth/themes/pix/splash.png if you are interested in changing it. May I suggest the following? It would also be suitable for the desktop, and less noticeable if the system crashes.
  12. This is optional as well. You may eliminate the cursor on the screen by installing unclutter using sudo apt-get install unclutter and then by adding the line @unclutter -idle 10 to the file above, again by using sudo nano ~/.config/lxsession/LXDE-pi/autostart.
